I have practiced yoga for many years, my practice has generally been Bikram Yoga, a yoga which appealed to me for the structure, strength and heat. The onset of menopause resulted in me struggling with the heat and dehydration (despite meticulous preparation) and needing to consider alternatives. Through Totally You Yoga I have discovered more nurturing and gentler forms of yoga.
My favourite is Restorative Yoga (which is so completely different to Bikram). Since making the change my love of yoga has grown and is now my “go to, happy place, my escape in a busy often stressful world”. The switch wasn’t easy having enjoyed the challenge, structure and benefits of Bikram. I always considered other forms of yoga not as strong, therefor not as beneficial.
Over the last 6 months I have learnt that I can still have a strong practice, there are still opportunities to challenge myself (both physically and mentally) and accept that this is where I need to be at this stage of my life. Whether it’s in a class or my own practice at home I love the opportunity to focus on me, my breath and disconnect from the world (and connect with myself) even if just for a little while.
